WEEKLY SPOLIGHT ON EMERGING ARTISTS: THE DERRYS
Updated: Sep 17, 2021
The Derrys, a rag tag fun times 3 piece from Naarm (Melbourne), Victoria, have a unique ability to create garage rock/punk music that will make you want to listen and also at times laugh as they confront current issues. Their 5 track EP Problems was released on September 3 2021 to all major streaming platforms. Band members Peter Younger - guitar and vocals, Dave Weir - bass, and Floyd Bassett - drums have an incredible ability to develop layered instrumentals and vocals that will make you want to listen to each and every lyric in their songs. The mature lyrical content is centred around the real life issues that people need to be aware of and take a stand for.
Toxic is the first track of the EP and the introductory instrumental section leads into the lyrical content that addresses the presence of toxic masculinity. The bass lines in this song are uniquely The Derrys as is the guitar riffs and drumming as the musicianship of this band showcases their years of hard work and determination to develop their individual voices as well as that of their instruments.
Problems is the title track of the EP and takes on the every day problems that people are encountering where the state of the world is described as being in a situation where if things aren't changed soon it could decide the future. There is an acknowledgement of the common questioning of everything happening within society where there is a never-ending commentary on choices made by individuals. The guitar riffs showcase the musical talent and maturity of the band members and it would be incredible to watch this song being performed live in order to witness the insane symphony that the band has been able to create.
Ruin Ya Life centres on the solutions being the problems when it comes to the system and that people are dying trying to cope with their life by drinking and taking drugs. The guitar riffs set the pace of the song in a way that the drums and bass are able to sync together to create an organic sound that will position The Derrys as a force of nature when it comes to garage rock and punk music.
Feel It is the fourth track on the EP and dives deep into the debate about climate change where people are starting to feel the effects of fossil fuels in their everyday life such as summer's getting hotter and winter getting colder. The definitive role that ordinary Australians are called on to have in addressing the issues is to acknowledge the changes happening in the environment. The rhythmic guitar riffs are layered with vocals and drums to create a classical garage rock sound with unique sections of punk rock that show the potential of the band to become an emerging artist that will make their presence felt in years to come in the Melbourne music scene.
The final track, Why?, questions the presence of a God that created a humanity that has racism, discrimination and slavery when society should be a safe and nurturing place for people where they are free from harm. The sound is different to the other tracks on the albums as emphasis is placed on the lyrics that should have listeners questioning what is happening in society and the theme of God working in mysterious ways is channelled through the instrumental sections where The Derrys have created an incredible symphony.
