WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT ON EMERGING ARTISTS: NO LAST CHANCES

This in an artist that I have had the pleasure of getting to listen to their music knowing that every note comes from a place of loving music and wanting to share their experiences with others even when they have had some tough times. No Last Chances, real name Simon Mcdonald, from New Zealand has created music that is described as Djent, Metal, Metal Core, Deathcore, Rock and even Heavy Rock. The latest single from No Last Chances 'Grief' released on Friday 6 August 2021 is dedicated to friend of Simon's who was killed by a drunk driver and is his way of dealing with this unexpected tragedy. Anyone who has lost a close friend in tragic circumstances will appreciate the difficulty one may have with expressing the emotions that are often associated with learning to live your life when people close to you pass away. In an Instagram post for No Last Chances, Simon explained that the passing of his friend hit him hard and meant that there was a long process of dealing with and working through the tragic circumstance.

The song 'Grief' has vocals that delve into the sad and reflective lyrical content that reflects the grieving process of any tragedy. The introduction is fierce with heavy rock influences and sets the tone for being able to recognise that there is anger in these moments because it is impossible to comprehend that your friend is never coming back. There is a transition into a distorted melody where the lyrics state 'Always on my mind. Every time that we searched that we will never get back again' that is almost a point of realisation that this is a moment that will never be shared again no matter how many times it crosses your mind. The ending of 'Grief' with more subdued metal and rock influences is about accepting that life has changed forever but it is important to remember the times that we have had with people and their influence on us. Simon has also mention on Instagram that his friend had heavily impacted his decision to do more clean vocals due his confidence in expressing his musicality that otherwise would not be showcased in Grief if it wasn't for his late friend.

Music can bring out the best in people even in the saddest and darkest times but as Simon has shown with his music project 'No Last Chances' that there is truly no reason to take those closest to you for granted and make sure that every chance that you do get to spend time with them is precious. I hope that this new release brings some peace to Simon and his late friend and honours his memory. All the money made from 'Grief' will be donated by Simon towards anti-drinkdriving campaigns.
