WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT ON EMERGING ARTISTS: SPICY LEMONS

The young talent from the Central Coast of New South Wales is showcased in the debut single 'Young One' released on 16 July 2021 by indie alternative rock trio Spicy Lemons. Band members are Toby Dowdell - Vocals, Guitar, Baritone Guitar, Bass; Luke Vincent - Vocals, Guitar, Banjo; and Zac Dowdell - Drums. The opportunity to record and released a song that has taken months even years to create is a privilege for any musician or band but to do so at a young age whilst still being in high school is even more incredible. The struggles of becoming an overnight success can make it hard for musicians to continue riding the trajectory of making it big because it can be easy to get lost in the hype of fame and fortune from a single song. It is a well known fact that it only takes one song to make an entry in the music industry but it is going to be twice as hard to ensure that the music that follows is on another level.

Spicy Lemons have made a huge impact on their fans so far with their first release and music video. Both of these have shown the potential that the trio has for creating more music like Young One which has incredible instrumentals and vocals layered in such a way that it is already a hit with their listeners. Spicy Lemons entered Young Ones into Triple J's Unearthed High competition this year so support the band by listening to it on Triple J Unearthed.

Young One has a unique sound that will set the band apart from other local artists through their raw vocals and instrumentals that as an emerging force to be reckoned with in years to come in the Central Coast and Newcastle area. The guitar riffs within the songs develop into a cohesive rhythm just as the lyrics describing the story of making it big with a song whilst still being in high school come to the conclusion that it comes with challenges. The instrumental sections where the guitars and drums create a symphony that is comparable with alternative rock and indie bands of recent times. The musicality of the band members is well beyond their years and it shows in the way that each section of the song has been structured from start to finish.

The music video for Young One features Spicy Lemons as students in a music class at high school being taught Smoke on The Water as an introduction to guitar. The band then composes an original song for an assessment when a mentor of the band named Connor approaches the classroom asking the boys if they wanted to record the song in the studio. The band record the song in the studio under the guidance of Connor and thank him for producing the song. Connor who is mentioned in the music video is Connor Massey from the band Deadshowws. After uploading the song on the internet, the boys of Spicy Lemons are confronted by reporters on their front lawn wanting to interview them about their new release. The manager of the band takes them to the ARIA Awards where the band isn't successful the first few times but after growing up and developing their music they are taking more seriously. The band's hard work and dedication to music is rewarded with a haul of ARIA Awards and press coverage in print media such as famous magazines. After their success at the ARIAs the band is invited to go on tour with a famous band. The production on the music video is of a high quality and stays true to the narrative that becoming an overnight success is going to bring challenges. All the crew and cast deserve to be congratulated on their fine work and the masterpiece that is the Young One music video.
